The story
Why Afrikids?
When Christel Kloppers' kids moved from an English school to an Afrikaans school, both still in the Foundation Phase, she went looking for an app they could play in the holidays to practise their Afrikaans. There wasn't one that fit, so she started building it.
Then she noticed her kids had nothing for isiXhosa either. That led down a rabbit hole: there are hardly any learning resources for children in most of South Africa's languages.
And it went deeper. With a background in counselling, Christel realised that her kids, and she herself, didn't know how many of our neighbours greet or show respect. Like holding your wrist when you give or receive something, or how different cultures and beliefs show care for one another. She wanted her children to know these things, and to grow up respecting the many ways South Africans live and believe.
So Afrikids became more than a language app. Every station follows the CAPS Foundation Phase curriculum, Playtime breaks get little bodies moving, and the Our People world teaches how South Africans greet, share and show respect.
Christel hopes other families will join the adventure: learning our languages, and learning about each other.
How it works
One small adventure at a time
Here's how a child moves through Afrikids, from the first tap to the sticker book.

Every world is a map of stations
-
Pick a world
Four worlds to explore: Language, Maths, Life Skills and Our People (South African cultures and greetings). In the Afrikaans version they're Taal, Wiskunde, Lewensvaardighede and Ons Mense.
- Language
- Maths
- Life Skills
- Our People
-
Follow the map
Each world is a map of stations. Children see where they've been and what's next, so progress feels like a journey.
-
Play a station
Every station takes just 3 to 5 minutes. Short enough for little attention spans, big enough to learn something new.
-
Earn stars and stickers
Stars for every station, and stickers to collect in their very own sticker book.
-
Playtime!
Regular Playtime breaks with Thando get children off the couch and moving, before the next adventure.
